pros: its the right size for the space, it isnt too heavy, its pretty, the cinnamon cherry finish is a warm espresso tone, metal handles, adjustable hinges, good for holding the lightweight items I need it for, and very clear instructions.
cons:
1. The door magnets are strong enough to bend the doors. (I resolved this by putting black tape over the strike plates; the magnets still work, but their pull is much less.)
2. The spring hinges are a PITA to install and scraped up the finish on the inside. (Resolved with a marker.)
3. Arrived with cracked and dented finish and corners on the interior non/adjustable shelf, despite the container being undamaged and this shelf being packed in the center of the box. Way to fail at QC, . (Resolved with marker; its out of sight, so I dont really care.)
4. The downside to lightweight and engineered wood is its flimsiness and relatively low load/bearing capacity. I wouldnt store books anywhere but on the bottom panel, for example. Instead, think craft storage, toys, linen closet, etc.
Other notes:
I am good at flatpack and I wasnt in a hurry, so I put this together myself over the course of several days. I recommend an electric screwdriver // there are a lot of screws. Also, if you nail down the corners of the back first, you cannot see the center divider to know if youre nailing the back into it correctly. So, dont do that. Instead, put a nail or two into the first, while you can still check that its centered, before doing the corners. Then attach the rest.
Getting the doors on was the hardest part and was where a second person would have been helpful, assuming they can hold the door perfectly still and the spring hinges dont pop out and scrape up the nearest surface. The spring part aside, the hinges are pretty great. After the doors are on, you just use the adjustment screws per the instructions to straighten the doors so everything is flush and square. Very cool. He loves it.
